Obesity is a hot topic, and it has been for many years now, as the United States continues to struggle with it. Mounting medical costs and the dangers of childhood obesity make it a important topic indeed.

But what about obesity in Idaho? How is our state doing in the battle against the chronic disease of obesity? Here are some statistics to think about:

  • Idaho is ranked 33/51 in states impacted by obesity.
  • The age most affected by obesity in Idaho is 45-64.
  • Obesity affects 28.6% of Idahoans.

Idaho scores well when it comes to diabetes; about 8.1% of Idahoans have diabetes, putting us near the lowest percentages, compared with other states. West Virginia, for example, has a diabetes rate of 15%. Utah and Colorado have a diabetes rate around 7%.

What about childhood obesity? About 25% of children ages 10-17 are overweight or obese in Idaho.
