Wash your hands
Wear a mask
Practice social distancing
Do any of these phrases sound familiar? It seems that everywhere we go—whether on social media, the store, or driving on the highway—we are counseled as to what we can do to ensure safety during this Covid-19 pandemic. But what else can we do that isn’t all over the internet already?
The answer is, essentially, self-care through health.
There have been studies conducted throughout the world to see if there is any correlation between obesity and Covid-19. According to studies in China, Australia, the United States, and several countries in Europe, there is something important to note about BMI and this current pandemic. The consensus is that the severity of Covid-19 is heightened in those with obesity, especially in younger people.
So, the big question: why does this correlation exist? The answer is found in the different mechanisms of the body. Excess weight can have an impact on different parts of the body. One of the biggest issues with excess weight and Covid-19 is found in how the lungs operate. The chest gets compressed, resulting in more work for the lungs to get air. This causes a direct effect for oxygen levels. Because the lungs have a harder time getting air, oxygen levels are typically lower. What does that mean in terms of Covid-19? Symptoms are heightened due to lower oxygen levels.
Another concern to note is the body’s response time. Obesity can cause inflammation throughout the body. That inflammation means a weakened and elongated response time for the body’s immune system. And, let’s face it, nobody wants to take an even longer amount of time to recover from Covid-19. If you find yourself among millions of Americans who struggle with excess weight, there is something we need you to know: you have power. And we know what you may be thinking. Perhaps you have tried different weight loss measures in the past that haven’t worked, leaving you physically and emotionally tired and frustrated.
